 History

This historic Temple of the Tooth was first built by King Wimaladharmasooriya I (1592-1604), a great king of Sri Lanka, but unfortunately the palace he built was destroyed by the Portuguese.
The present palace was later built by King Sri Weera Parakrama Narendrasinghe (1707 - 1739).

Also, at present the Mahanayake Thero of the Asgiriya Chapter and the Mahanayake Thero of the Malwathu Chapter reside in this palace and the Diyawadana Nilame is in charge of this.

Even today, the Tooth Relic continues to be revered and served in accordance with ancient rituals. The monks of both Malwathu and Asgiriya pay homage to the Tooth Relic daily. Nanumura festival is held as a pooja.

If we talk about the buildings here, the palace where we live is located in the new palace called Patthirippuwa. These buildings were built between 1805 - 1812 AD. The architecture was done by Alakeshashwara Dingiriappu or Devendra Mulachari.

Also, when talking about the Temple of the Tooth, the Dalada Perahera is an unforgettable special event. It is a special procession held in Sri Lanka.

This is held every year in the month of Nikini and the procession adds a large number of traditional art forms endemic to Sri Lanka. It is believed that the Dalada Perahera began in the 4th century, eight hundred years after the death of the Supreme Buddha, when the sacred tooth relics of the Buddha were brought to Sri Lanka from India.

There is also a very strong and virtuous ivory class. They are Sinha Raja, Ekadanthaya, Indi Raja, Sumana, Vijaya Raja, Jaya Raja, Kadira, Nalaka, Miyan Raja, Burma Raja, Migara, Kaveri, Nawam Raja, Kandula.

It is our responsibility and duty to preserve such historical sites. We must ensure that these things are preserved for future generations to see.
